Australia's Biggest BBQ attracts rising culinary talent

Mount Augustus Tourist Park, 31 August 2024 – Local culinary talent, James Kelly, is set to bring his exceptional skills to this year’s Australia’s Biggest BBQ, adding a fresh and exciting dimension to the event at Mount Augustus Tourist Park.

James, who began cooking at a young age, has been a familiar face at past Gascoyne Food Festivals, where he began his food journey alongside Western Australia Food Ambassador Don Hancey and Chef Pete Manifis.

His journey through the culinary world has been marked by dedication and passion, beginning as an after-school kitchen hand under Food Festival alumni chef Stuart Laws. James then completed his apprenticeship with Kenny McHardy at the renowned Manuka in Fremantle.

After gaining experience at Manuka, James continued to build his expertise with a brief stint at Melissa Palinka’s Young George and then at the modern French restaurant, La Lune, in East Fremantle.

His culinary journey eventually led him to H & C Urban Winery in Fremantle, where he works alongside Gord Kahle, another legend of the Biggest BBQ. During this time, James also participated in two Gascoyne Food Festivals, collaborating with prominent chefs such as Sophie Budd (Taste Budds), Melissa Palinkis, and Anna Gare.

This won’t be James’s first time at the helm of the BBQ, as he previously showcased his talents alongside Gord Kahle at the 2021 Biggest BBQ event. Now, in 2024, James is eager to display his craft once again, offering guests a culinary experience that promises to be as memorable as it is delicious.

The 2024 Australia’s Biggest BBQ is sold out so start planning a 2025 visit to Mt Augustus and experience another lineup of talented chefs in an unspoilt outback setting. This event is not just a BBQ, but a celebration of local food, culture, and community.
